The course of the #COVID19 pandemic in the Americas remains highly uncertain. A prospective analysis considering possible scenarios in the short-term (6-9 months) can facilitate the understanding on what are the critical areas to be tackled to control the pandemic.
The main challenges countries 🌎 faced up till now, was the non-availability of vaccines doses, and inequity in the access to vaccines.
We have witnessed tremendous technological innovation in the development of COVID19 vaccines 💉
However we see terrible disparities in COVID-19 vaccination coverage between countries, explained mainly by income level 💰
Given scarce resources, countries were forced to respond to clinical demands from moderate to severe disease (hospitalizations)
A great deal of the response focused on increasing hospital capacity, especially for ICU.
The low levels of public expenditure reflects in unavailability of critical resources: human, infrastructure, supplies, and underfunded essential public health functions.
The long-standing systemic deficiencies in our health systems 🏥, and the inadequate priority we have afforded health over the years, has prolonged this health crisis.
We therefore have seen a higher impact of the pandemic in our Region 🌎 as a direct consequence of these vulnerabilities.
